Implementation of a new USSD code framework has commenced among mobile network operators in Nigeria. Previously, each network provider had its unique USSD codes for customer service access. In March 2023, the Nigerian Communications Commission mandated all telecommunications providers to harmonize their USSD codes, setting the deadline for this transition as Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

According to a review by the NCC, the updated codes are as follows:

• NIN — *996#
• VAS — *305#
• Share services — *321#
• Account Balance — *310#
• Data plans — *312#
• Airtime recharge — *311#
• Borrowing services — *303#
• Data balance — *323#

As for banking services, the NCC’s report on short code harmonization recommended that banks retain their codes to avoid significant disruptions to service delivery. Therefore, the changes in USSD codes for mobile network operators do not affect banking services.
